The Workforce Connection Centers in Eastern New Mexico have a dual mission-to help Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) clients become self sufficient and the help federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) clients to become better skilled employees.
The current mission, however, is not totally new. Part of it began in the late 1990’s. The Workforce Connection Centers, New Mexico Works Program was created in 1998 after the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act was enacted in 1996.
The Reconciliation Act transformed the nation's welfare system in a Work First program. The program, which is known as TANF and is a partnership between multiple Workforce Connection Centers , the Income Support Division of the New Mexico Human Services Department, and the Eastern Area Workforce Development Board (EAWDB), provides welfare clients with life skills training, educational opportunities and job placement services as well as other occupational services that may be considered needed.
A program since 1998, which is known as WIA and is in cooperation with the EAWDB, was born in 1998. It provides services for adults, displaced homemakers and dislocated workers to improve their employability skills, find and or retain jobs, and earn higher salaries through on the job training as well as classroom instruction.
Services are provided at no cost to local employers and all job seekers. The services provided by NMWCC are tax dollars collected and returned to each local community to stimulate the economy and create a stronger economic environment that will enhance the quality of life and standard of living for families in our community through:
Increased employment, retention and earnings
Improved quality of workforce
Enhanced productivity of workforce
Reduction of costly turnover
Cost saving to employers
